Dean Kaufert and Roger Roth statements on Gov Doyle's budget proposal from The Appleton Post Crescent on 2/14/07:

"It's a fat budget," said state Rep. Dean Kaufert, R-Neenah. "There are a lot of fee increases, a lot of assessment increases and a lot of tax increases."

State Rep. Roger Roth, R-Grand Chute, said Doyle abandoned his earlier call for the state to live within its means.

"Tonight the governor, I believe, abandoned that philosophy and introduced a budget that adds $1.7 billion in new spending using a whole assortment of tax schemes," Roth said. "I think it's going to be the job of this Legislature to put this big budget on a diet."

The article quoted Roth again saying: "Two weeks ago, the governor gave us a State of the State message saying that government must learn to live within its means. Tonight the governor I believe abandoned that philosophy and introduced a budget that adds $1.7 billion in new spending using a whole assortment of tax schemes." —Rep. Roger Roth, R-Grand Chute

Congrats to the Post Crescent for getting Roth to make what is likely his first public statement on any issue. Hopefully there will be more of this, and increased demand for the reasoning and rational of our elected officials from our local media outlets.
